Join fellow SDMA members and book lovers as we discuss Berenice Abbott: A Life in Photography by Julia Van Haaften. Discover the life and legacy of Berenice Abbott, a trailblazing 20th-century photographer whose groundbreaking work spanned six decades. From documenting New York’s transformation in her iconic Changing New York series to pioneering imaging techniques in science photography, Abbott’s fearless spirit and innovative artistry redefined modern photography. This compelling biography by Julia Van Haaften brings Abbott’s fascinating journey to life, featuring her collaborations with luminaries like Man Ray and her bold feminist perspective. Complete with over 90 stunning images, this book celebrates Abbott’s enduring impact on photography and modern art.
Coffee and light snacks will be served. The book club will be followed by a docent-led tour of art works relating to the book, including highlights of the newly opened MOPA@SDMA exhibition, Shifting Visions: Photographs from the Collection of Ken and Jacki Widder.
